In 2018 alone more than 600 people have been treated in New York City emergency rooms after consuming the drug K2. The drug has been linked to numerous mass overdoses in New York City and around in the country. In May of 2018, emergency workers rushed to Brooklyn to treat 14 people, all of whom were sickened due to what is believed to be K2.
Police also believe the driver who crashed his vehicle into Times Square in 2016, injuring 22 pedestrians and fatally injuring a tourist, was high on synthetic marijuana.
What is K2?
K2 is a synthetic marijuana, which according to experts, is nothing like traditional marijuana.
“Synthetic marijuana is a mixture of industrial chemicals intended to mimic the effects of THC, the naturally occurring active compound found in marijuana. The chemicals are sprayed on bits of dried plant material, packaged in colorful wrappers, nicknamed ‘poison packets,’ and sold under the guise of potpourri and herbal incense in local convenience stores, smoke shops and even online.” – Center on Addiction.
Why is it Dangerous?
The side effects of synthetic marijuana can be serious and even life-threatening. Rapid heart rate, agitation, vomiting, and hallucinations are among the most commonly noted side effects. Not only is K2 illegal, but several of the components needed to make the drug are as well.
In an attempt to elude law enforcement and to continue creating and selling K2, chemists and dealers have created numerous variations of the drug.
What Should you Know About K2?
K2 is generally cheaper than marijuana, which makes it more accessible for youngsters, low-income individuals, and homeless individuals. The drug is especially dangerous for individuals who suffer from undiagnosed or untreated psychiatric disorders, which according to experts, may increase negative side effects.
As of June 5th, 2018 the New York State Chamber of Justice passed a bill intended to reduce the number of drivers who get behind the wheel under the influence of synthetic marijuana, or other illicit, lab-created drugs. It is hard to believe that anyone would get behind the wheel after consuming a drug that could cause hallucinations, but unfortunately, it is happening every day in communities across the country and in our own backyards.
When drivers choose to drive under the influence and injure or kill innocent people, it is absolutely imperative to hold them accountable.
